We
are a group of about 60 volunteers whose pastime and passion is interpreting
Sonoma’s unique history and contribution to California. Since
1994, we have offered annually an eight-week training course which prepares
docents to present the stories of Mission San Francisco Solano de Sonoma
and General Mariano Vallejo to our visitors. Our training courses are
taught by outstanding university scholars and researchers, historians
and archeologists, and the courses attract new prospective docents,
current docents upgrading their knowledge and skills, and many auditors
from the community who simply want to know more about their towns’
histories.
Our historic parks are visited by more than 14,000 fourth grade students
of California history each year. It is a special privilege of the Docents
to assist the State Park Guide at Mission San Francisco de Solano in
conducting tours for school children on two days a week. The Docent
Council offers special tours to large groups such as Elderhostel, Globus,
and Tauck by arrangement. And every weekend, docents conduct regularly
scheduled tours of the Mission, the Vallejo Home, and the Petaluma Adobe.
Watch our website for announcement of a new historical tour which will
begin the summer of 2007.
Whether it is for a family outing or a romantic “getaway”
to wine country, we invite you to visit Sonoma and visit our California
State Historic Parks. We look forward to sharing them with you!
